5 Ways to Make Smoothies Healthier

Ok. Take a deep breath.

Because this one might come as a shock to some of you.

According to traditions like Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, smoothies aren’t all they’re cracked up to be.

And that’s because the coldness and food combinations that are found in most smoothies are mucous forming and make smoothies really hard to digest.

But digestion is pretty much the foundation of your health.

It allows you to absorb nutrients and enables you to rid your body of build up and toxins.

And it influences literally every single other part of your physiology.

So when you drink a smoothie, you might end up with some very uncomfortable symptoms.

It’s not uncommon for smoothies to lead to bloating, gassiness, loose stools, constipation, foggy-brain feeling, and feeling cold all the time.

And honestly, that’s not even a complete list of things that can go wrong with you when you drink a smoothie.

There are problems from a modern standpoint too.

Blending breaks down the fiber in fruit.

This means that instead of being slowly released into your bloodstream, your blood gets flooded with all of that fruit sugar at once.

And this sugar spike can mess up your equilibrium as badly as a candy bar.

Which can lead to bigger problems down the line, like hormone imbalance.

So if you’re a smoothie lover (like me!) then you’ve got to find ways to make smoothies better for you.

Because as an ambitious mother, you can’t afford to be in anything less than tip-top shape.

And having a smoothie shouldn’t be the reason you’re dragging.

Here are 5 ways to make smoothies healthier:

1. Drink your smoothie at room temperature, never frozen or with ice.

We’re so used to drinking beverages with ice in the modern world that most of us don’t realize how much of a negative impact cold foods and beverages can have on us.

But if you start to observe your body after you have something cold, you might notice some of the symptoms I listed above.

You might also notice that your tongue has a thick coat on it, which is a sign that your body isn’t digesting food as well as it should be.

To avoid this, only use fresh fruits and veggies in your smoothies and avoid anything frozen.

2. Drink smoothies only when the weather is warm.

Bonus points if the weather’s dry and not humid.

This is because our bodies and minds react to the environments we are in.

And even if your smoothie isn’t ice cold, the ingredients in smoothies are mostly cooling and moistening to the system.

So in order to stay healthy and balanced, you want to avoid consuming smoothies when your environment is already putting cold and damp into your system.

3. Ideally, only use 2-3 base ingredients in your smoothie.

Another thing that can slow down digestion is when you put too many ingredients into your smoothie.

And from a flavor standpoint, you’re not letting any of the ingredients shine if you put too many into your smoothie.

So keep it simple.

Stick to 2-3 base ingredients plus a few herbs or other supplements and your body will have a much easier time taking it all in.

Which brings me to my next tip.

4. Add warming herbs and spices to your smoothie.

Herbs and spices are wonderful for many reasons.

Even more so when it comes to mitigating the negative effects of tricky foods like smoothies.

Adding warming ingredients like ginger, turmeric, black pepper, cinnamon, and cardamom to your smoothie can balance out the cold dampness of smoothies and help your body digest more efficiently.

5. Never use dairy milk in your smoothies.

Dairy causes your body to create mucous, which impedes digestion and makes you feel heavy, stuck, and sluggish overall.

And definitely, don’t combine dairy with bananas.

The combination of dairy and bananas is a double mucous whammy, causing way too much build up for most bodies to handle.

But you should always use some sort of fat in your smoothies because it’ll help you absorb fat-soluble vitamins.

So instead of using dairy, try using a handful of cashews, some avocado, or coconut oil to fatten up your smoothie.

Do you have uncomfortable symptoms that drag you down every day?

The solution could be as simple as adjusting your smoothie habits.

Or there might be a bigger imbalance that needs to be considered.
